A lot is riding on Batman vs Superman. Not only is it the first film to feature both superheroes, but director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man Of Steel) has also got to introduce a new DC movie-verse of characters including Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones’ Khal Drogo) as Aquaman. At least four more franchise films are in the pipeline.

Fans’ appetite has been in overdrive for months, but the critical voice has been silenced until a couple of days before Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill hit screens. And each other. Over and over and over and over again.

There’s no suggestion Snyder has served up something quite as turgid as 2015’s top flop Fantastic Four, which was the last time a big-budget comic blockbuster’s reviews were kept under wraps this late, but the caginess is often considered an admittance of worry by the studio.

Ramp up the hype machine on your own terms and don’t allow opinions to filter out until everyone has already booked their opening weekend tickets.

And it’s worked. Vox released advance bookings on March 1 and say demand for IMAX and 4DX has been extremely high.

Teasers have set the scene for a superhero smackdown, but will DC lay one on Marvel with their two leading guys?

The bottom line Only the city on screen will be set alight.
