When Stallone announced his plans to create an all-star action movie, Hollywood blogs went into speculation meltdown and devoted Rambo fans were beside themselves with jittery anticipation. The rest exchanged derisive comments about the predictable nature of Sly’s scripts. It was never going to be heavy on academic merit, but this film will surely deliver on its main promises, which are, put simply, old-school action and heroes to match. Naturally, the hard-as-nails mercenary theme reigns supreme, and we find out heroes pushing themselves to the limit as they attempt to overthrow a Latin American dictator. While this undoubtedly has the potential to become a cult classic and will have audiences flooding to the cinema, whether it will deliver any depth remains to be seen.
