As boxing movies go, this ticks all the ‘tired and clichéd’ boxes: there’s a tough guy hero with a heart of gold (he’s in the underground fighting world to raise funds to buy mum’s medicine); an evil adversary (Big Al, who gets our hero beaten up by a gang so that he can’t become champion); multiple opportunities for training montages (an ex-coach is persuaded out of retirement to help our hero); and the big finale, where the fists are flying in honour of a dead mother, and not just because we like seeing guys beating each other up. If, however, you do just like seeing guys beating each other up, you’ll no doubt enjoy this: it’s directed by the fight co-ordinator behind Rocky, Raging Bull and Fight Club.
