WIN! Captain America DVD

We didn’t want to like this movie. We were expecting a guy in tights frolicking across our screen, and some nifty CGI enhanced battle sequences, and that’s about it.

What a shock then when we got a super hero movie that is in no denial about its own genre. It’s self-consciously aware, and turns the saccharine nationalism into character development. Set in the characters original ‘40s, it pokes fun at men in patriotic tights, which almost makes us forgive the bizarrely diverse team of warriors Chris Evans amasses to help him defeat that ultimate enemy, Nazis.

There are some solid action sequences and much posturing by Chris Evans, which all form a sort of easily enjoyable mush requiring little in the way of brain power. The non-sequitur ending, a bow to its commitment to the upcoming Marvel ensemble movie, The Avengers), overall it’s a solid super hero flick. Jessica Davey-Quantick
