Jazz Club

Swing, jazz, and flashy bartenders at Oryx Rotana lounge Discuss this article

This nightspot seems to want to evoke several past eras, all at once, and we kind of dig it. First, you’ve got cool jazz tunes and the funky arched stage taking us back to the 1920s and making us want to call people ‘dollface’. Next, they channel Tom Cruise in the 1980s with their sassy bartenders performing tricks and spins with the bottles, and even drinks they light on fire. So basically, they’ve taken this beyond a quiet corner for a Thursday night and made it an event.

The food menu isn’t bad, but not much to write home about: but who really goes here for the food? If you are hungry there are some excellent restaurants in the hotel as well. Go there, then hit the Jazz Club. What keeps this one swinging is the music. The band is solid, but we wish they’d stay more firmly in the jazz and swing oeuvre: odd branching outs occur, and they just confuse us. Its ok, you don’t have to try so hard, we’ll like you even if you’re not doing a salsa version of Gangnam style.

The atmosphere is slightly luxe without being overdone: you want nice shoes, but you can still get in in jeans. We get the impression they’re going for more higher-end, but we sort of like them in the in-between realm they’ve hit. It keeps it relaxed. Prices are fairly middle of the road, and fair for Qatar. Over all, it’s a solid choice if you want a night out with some good tunes: just make sure to order a drink that can be flipped upside down and twirled around so the bartenders can show off!
