Celebrate like a Brazilian
September 4-7
Don’t expect anything particularly tall and tan and young and lovely, but do expect spectacular fanfare at Ipanema for four days in celebration of Brazilian Independence Day (which is actually on September 7). The buffet is Bahia inspired (an area of Brazil on the east coast) and you can enjoy watching a capoeira performing, blending elements of dance, acrobatics and music, as well as a live samba band. Lindo maravilhiso!
QR299. 6.30pm-11.30pm. Ipanema, Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, West Bay (4419 6100).

Dreaming of a white…brunch
September 5
Because, let’s face it, it’s not going to be a white Christmas (unless you leave Doha for vacation). That said, you can have a wonderful white-themed brunch at popular all-day-dining spot Choices, a Brit-centric venue of fun and frivolity. Dress up in white and give it a go.
QR225 food, QR350 other. 12.30pm-4pm. Choices, Oryx Rotana, Umm Ghuwaylina (4402 3333).

Get cultured at a Tchaikovsky concert
September 5
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra is paying homage to a classical great, with variations on his Piano Concerto No 1 in B flat Minor and Symphony No. 5 in E Minor. Putting it bluntly, if you’re not a classical aficionado, you’ll still know some of it.
QR75-200. From 7.30pm. Katara Opera House, Katara Cultural Village, www.qatarphilharmonicorchestra.org.

Have a blooming funny evening
September 7 & 8
The Chuckle Club is bringing over three comedians for two nights and at two different venues. An American, a Scotsman and an Englishman (nope, we’re not making a joke), will perform stand up for your pleasure. Believe it or not, he makes Jack Dee seem like the happiest man on the planet.
QR120. Sep 7 Dunes, Grand Hyatt, West Bay Lagoon (4448 1234); Sep 8 Crowne Plaza – The Business Park, Airport Road (4408 7777). Tickets www.virginmegastore.me.
